Technician Gauge: Click to enlarge Pocket Tech is a tool that allows you to assess the actual brake lining remaining and also gives you a quick reference on maximum drum wear that is allowed so you can ensure vehicle safety in a fast & cost efficient manner.

Designed with vehicle maintenance inspection in mind, the Pocket Tech Gauge provides you with a quick precise instrument to assess the actual percentage or fractional measurement of remaining brake lining with no wheel or brake drum removal*, without releasing or backing off the brakes. This tool is ideal for those who document brake lining measurement as part of the PM inspection process.

* NOTE! Some dust shields do not have the inspection slot lined up with the gap between the shoes. On those types either dust shield removal is required or a 7/8" hole needs to be drilled at the gap between the pads the first time.

All gauges will give you a quick reference on maximum drum wear that is allowed so you can ensure vehicle safety in a fast and cost efficient manner. These gauges are for quick reference and not a replacement for a micrometer.

The drum wear allowance on the standard drum is a maximum of 0.120”. The relief is half that measurement due to the fact that you are only measuring ½ of the drum diameter wear.

How it works:
Pocket Tech Gauge is inserted between the brake shoe table and the drum at the space between the lining blocks. You simply slide the tool in until it stops and read the measurement that is marked on the tool.

Drum Measurement
  1. Apply the brakes to the vehicle
  2. Insert either end of the Technicians Gauge tool between the lining pads
  3. Make sure the relief is towards the drum
  4. When the tool is parallel to the drum surface and the relief area is touching the outer edge of the drum, the tool will indicate the maximum wear on the drum allowed
**Note that .120" thousands of an inch is standard drum wear allowance. Since the relief is approximately half .120 thousands of an inch, you are only measuring ½ the drum diameter wear.
